Posted on 05.Mar.2009 By Perenthia
*Laurence * What was your 1st job? (Doesn't have to be industry related)
*Cam* Working construction with my Dad, when I was a teenager.
*Laurence* How long have you been in the IT industry?
*Cam* For about 12 years now,, Since 1996, Late 1996.
*Laurence* Were you always a fan of games? If so, what is one of your favourite games?
*Cam* Yes, I have always been a fan of games. I played various table top role playing games when I was younger but as far as computer games are concerned Legend of Zelda is one of my all time favourite games.
Onto The game :)
*Laurence* Why Perenthia? Out of all the names you could have chosen.. Why did you choose "Perenthia"?
*Cam* That is good question, it just kind of popped into my head one day, not sure if I made it up or heard something similar but it sounded like a good name for a continent and then the name of the game became that continent since the main part of the story in my head takes place and involves the people of that. I have actually had the map for Perenthia long before I decided to make it into a game, the ideas and concepts were something like day dreams for me that once I learned to program started to become a reality.
*Laurence* Nice, well i like the name, somehow suits the game
*Cam* There is a lot to be said for the sound of name, the musical quality it has can sometimes convey meaning.
*Laurence* When was the concept of Perenthia thought up?
*Cam* Well, ever since I was a young lad I was into knights and dragons and such. I was a big fan of Legos for a number of years, had almost all of the Knight related ones. I used to pretend people would enter into this fantasy world and encounter Knights, etc. Probably owe a lot of that to the writings of C.S. Lewis and Tolkien.
Anyway, I started creating maps and the like for this world; I loved to draw back then and loved to draw fantasy maps. Some of those early drawings survived into later years and I would day dream about this world. Over the years things were forgotten but what started Perenthia were the remnants of some of those early drawings and day dreaming.
As I got older and started playing computer games I started to think about creating a world of my own and with those old maps in hand Perenthia was born.
*Laurence* Are there any long term goals that you have set, or plan on setting?
*Cam* My main long term goal for Perenthia is to create a fun virtual world, where players can live out a fantasy instead of just day dreaming it.
*Laurence* What game play features will set Perenthia apart from other silverlight games?
*Cam* one actual game play element will be the advancement structure. As players progress the goal is to advance game play along with them so that the whole game is not realized in the first few levels. Certainly some things will remain constant but the goals should grow with the player and not just kill harder monsters but involving oneself in the world.
Right now, multiplayer, since I have not seen any other games supporting this kind of multiplayer interaction. I am sure more games like this will popup but for now it is one of the first of its kind. What I hope will continue to separate it as more games crop up with be the immersive environment, player community and continual development.
Experience gain and level advancement will shift at higher levels and along the skill track of the player to provide a different experience after mastery of the lower level functions has been achieved.
Of course, most of this is theoretical but all too often games feel the same at higher levels as they do at the lowest of levels, the excitement of exploration is gone but not the need to achieve and with some players the need to socialize
*Laurence*Thank you for your time, good luck and have fun trying to fix all the bugs on "The List"! Got any last words?
*Cam* Yeah, I am really looking forward to interacting with the actual players in finding out what works, what is fun and what is not fun. I do not want mindless tasks in Perenthia, I want players to always have a goal and that goal should not be writing scripts that automate the boredom. If players are finding that they desire scripts to automate certain parts of the game then I want to change those parts of the game. I enjoy creating the world for everyone to play in; I want them to enjoy playing in it.
*Laurence* Cool, sounds like you're going to keep in contact with the community a lot.
*Cam* Yes, I hope to as much as I can.
